In Dependence

By Sarah Ladipo Manyika

The story follows Tayo Ajayi, a brilliant young Nigerian scholar who sails to England in the early 1960s after receiving a scholarship to study at Oxford University. Filled with the ambition and optimism of a generation witnessing the birth of a new Africa, Tayo's life shifts when he meets Vanessa Richardson. Vanessa is a free-spirited, intelligent British woman and the daughter of a former colonial officer who served in Nigeria. The two fall deeply in love, but their passionate relationship is repeatedly strained and pulled apart by racial prejudice, family expectations, and the heavy geopolitical shifts of the late 20th century.
